Know IES Exam Pattern and Get the Right IES Coaching to Succeed in ESE

The UPSC conducts examinations known as the Engineering Services Examination or ESE for selection of engineers into government departments in civil, mechanical, electrical and ECE wings. UPSC exams are tough and highly competitive, with thousands of candidates vying for a few hundred job openings in the Indian Engineering Services. Only the best of the best can hope to be selected.

If you wish to succeed you will need to be painstakingly meticulous in studies and preparation for the ESE. Successful students have been known to start their preparations at least two years prior to the exam date. You can easily succeed. The topics of the IES/ ESE exams are something you are already familiar with.                    The IES Exam pattern goes something like this:

ESE exam is divided into two parts. The first part is written exam with various sub-sections and the second part, the personality test or interview, is open only to those who have scored highest marks.

Part I covers general ability test in paper I and objective questions under civil, mechanical, electrical, electronics & telecommunication engineering in paper II and III. Paper III and IV cover the same topics but examine your potential. Paper II & III are assigned two hours each while III and IV are assigned 3 hours. Each paper has 200 marks with a total of 1000 marks in all.

It may be noted that the questions differ according to the engineering streams.

Part II comprises of the personality test with a total of 200 marks. Only candidates who have qualified from the first section are eligible for the personality test. This covers aspects of the candidate such as leadership qualities, initiative, tact, interactive qualities, mental agility, powers of observation, integrity of character and other qualities tested in an interview.

Many people will recommend that you go in for IES coaching. This can be helpful if you have doubts and questions about a variety of topics. There are tutors available to help resolve these questions and make you perfect. IES coaching institutes also help you with mock tests and analysis of your performance so you can address your weak points and develop competence to take on the tough UPSC ESE exam. However, IES coaching is not absolutely essential for ESE exam. If you are an above average student you already know the topics and all you have to do is focus on two things:

Prepare meticulously and practice with the help of previous years’ question papers. You will know which questions are asked and how the same question may be worded in a different way. You can sort out tougher questions and focus on them.

Practice also helps build speed and accuracy. These are essential since you have to answer and get right maximum number of questions within the limited time allotted. Time yourself with mock tests and build up speed. Accuracy is just as important since wrong answers get negative marking.

IES coaching for ESE exams does help but in the end, it all depends on how well you focus and prepare for this vital exam.
